cemetery at 12:45:00 p.m. the democrats will roll out another who's who of speakers at the democratic national convention tonight. former president bill clinton is among the high-profile names. our area played a big role in last night's kickoff. maryland governor martin o'malley, house minority leader steny hoyer and former virginia governor and senate candidate tim kaine addressed the crowd. san antonio mayor julian castro gave the keynote address. michelle obama talked about her family and defended barack obama's policies. >> when it comes to rebuilding our economy, barack is thinking about folks like my dad and like his grandmother. he is thinking about the pride that comes from a hard day's work. that's why he signed the lily led better fair pay act to help women get equal pay for equal work. that's why he cut taxes for

working families and small businesses and fought to get the auto industry back on its feet. [ applause ] >> president obama watched the first lady's speech in the treaty room of the white house with daughters sasha and malia. republicans are hammering president obama on the national debt which has reached a dubious milestone. wisdom martin has what those numbers mean. >> reporter: last week's republican national convention featured a rolling debt clock. it hit $16 trillion for the first time ever just as the democratic national convention was kicking off in north carolina. >> ouch. it's just another one of those reminders that we are piling on the debt in a dangerous way with no plan to start to bring it back down to a reasonable level. >> it's entirely appropriate that it happened in the democratic national convention. $5.4trillion of the $16 trillion in federal debt have happened in the past four
9:04 am
years. >> the debt is being piled on taxpayers whose' current share is $189,000 per household and growing. >> here's the bottom line. we want it spend money. we don't want to pay for it. and so we're actually handing that bill to our kids. it's pretty unconscionable and yet that's what it is. >> reporter: for families analysts say every dollar of debt is a future tax increase. >> it's a big imposition on ife forget vacations and summer camps. life is going to be harder. >> reporter: in fact, in about two months more debt will have been added under president obama than was piled up under every other president through bill clinton. the obama campaign argues he plans to bring the deficit down in part by raising taxes on those making over $250,000 a year. >> what's necessary is to stabilize the debt and then -- and then work from there. you can't balance the budget in the short term because to do that would be to ratchet down the economy. >> reporter: the congressional budget office however found president obama's 2013 budget would add $6.4 trillion more in new deficits over the next 10
9:05 am
years. that works out to about 54,000 more per household. >> we have got to stop spending money we just don't have!! [ applause and cheers ] >> we have to cut spending!! [ applause and cheers ] >> we have to get this budget deficit under control and get this debt under control! >> reporter: now, there are estimates that we are paying about $500 billion a year in interest and that's with rates near zero. if they went up only 1%, it would add $1.3 trillion to our interest payments over the decade. now, no one knows when the rates will go up, but it's a given that eventually they will rise. tony? >> thank you. meanwhile, gop presidential nominee mitt romney is not getting the response he had hoped from the republican national convention. >> according to a new gallup poll 46% of people now support mitt romney and 47% are in favor of president obama. romney is the first republican since 1964 to receive no post-
9:06 am
convention bump in this poll. republican vice- presidential candidate paul ryan will be campaigning in iowa today again. he will split time in iowa and ohio. he did that yesterday. both are considered key battleground states. congressman ryan continues to drive home his point about the national debt which now tops as wisdom said $16 trillion. >> this is a serious threat to our economy. of all the broken promises from president obama, this is probably the worst one. this debt is threatening jobs today. it's threatening prosperity today. it is guaranteeing that our children and grandchildren get a diminished future. >> congressman ryan campaigns in battleground states. mitt romney is spending time in vermont and new hampshire preparing for the upcoming presidential debates. a ruling from the state board of elections in virginia is causing concern for the romney camp.

former congressman virgil [ indiscernible ] junior was qualified or has qualified for the presidential ballot. he spent 12 years in congress and 24 years in the state's senate serving as a democrat an independent then a republican. goode's name on the ballot could be an obstacle for romney. he is running as the constitutional party's nominee. but he also has support from the independent green party. republicans are challenging this ruling. making headlines this morning, a transgender inmate serving life in prison for murder is about to get expensive sex change surgery and taxpayers will be paying for it. a federal judge ordered massachusetts prison officials to provide the operation for michele as a way to treat gender identity disorder. massachusetts senator scott brown calls the decision an outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars. the person was born male but has received hormone treatments and now lives as a woman in an

9:09 am
know what kind of information the fbi is collecting. every apple device has a unique identification number which lets itunes and app developers know which device is running which app. for example, the id could allow game developers to keep track of users' high scores. the hacker group anti-sec says it actually found 12 million apple ids on an fbi agent's laptop. anti-sec says the data file had user names, zip codes, cell phone numbers and addresses but chose just to post the device name and number. the group says the fbi is using apple device information for a tracking people project in its own words. the fbi is disputing the hackers' claims. the fbi says that it never asked for and never possessed that kind of a database. security experts say just having that identification number alone would not necessarily pose a problem but if someone was able to take it and merge it with other
9:10 am
personally identifying data, then it could expose to you something such as identity theft. we have links on our website to some of those sites that have gone ahead and downloaded that information and published those id numbers. you can go on there and check your own. >> melanie, has it group done it just to prove they can do it? >> reporter: when you go on -- it's getting into the [ indiscernible ] the reason they said they did it is they have a beef with the security "community" with federal agencies they say go to hackers and ask for their help when them those hackers to help them expose cyberthreats but then turn around and label these hackers and criminals and arrest them. there have been a number of high-profile arrests in the hacker "community" so they see that as a double standard and so i think that was part of the beef that they have with the security community why they call themselves anti-security. so they went in, they said they wanted to basically -- they
9:11 am
weren't going specifically for this apple id information. they just found a flaw and a way to exploit the laptop of one of the fbi agents who works in cyber security and they found that information on that laptop and decided to publish it. >> very interesting. thank you, melanie alnwick. how you can join the nation in celebrating the life of neil armstrong, details straight ahead. >> also, 1,000 d.c. residents getting physicals today courtesy of dr. oz. >> reporter: dr. oz is here busy working. coming up he is going to check in on some of the residents who have already gotten their checkups and will give me my numbers. we'll see how i'm doing, as well. most importantly we'll see how the city is doing. this is an amazing opportunity. howard university hospital, the school of medicine, dr. oz, fox 5 all coming together to make sure we are all healthier as a group. we are going to tell you how it works live next on "fox 5 morning news." stay with us.

9:31 am
because there is no rain on our radar now. there might be a pop-up shower or thunderstorm best chances southeast. a front has been trying to get through the area, it's a very weak front. and just a couple of light showers and sprinkles early this morning but you can see, here's the good news, behind the front, the air is not cooler but it's a little drier. so maybe we'll lose just a touch of that humidity that we have had out there for the last couple of days and things will start to feel gradually a little better. another cold front, so what's going to happen here is we're going to slowly improve things over time here and as we get into friday, that cold front will bring us another chance for a shower or thunderstorm and then i think you'll really start to notice the cooler air behind the front as we get into saturday and sunday. here's your futurecast. it's been very aggressive with the rain showers this morning. this is way overplaying what's out there. there could be a few sprinkles and showers toward midday and then clear out. so later this afternoon we'll see more and more sunshine. a late day shower particularly southeast of the city but we'll start to clear and dry out
9:32 am

oregon last friday. i think it's sharp look. school officials didn't do this as a gimmick. rather they were offered a price break of nearly $150,000 if it installed a black field rather than a green one. >> wonder why. >> maybe they couldn't really move the -- the black turf or whatever, so they said, hey, we'll give you a price break. they said okay. >> i don't know. >> all speculation. purely speculation. is it after 9:30? yes, as tucker said, after 9:30 we do a lot of speculating. let's go with that. >> after 9:30. kim kardashian and kanye west. what he has to say about a sex tape. >> which royal let crown jewels out not long after throwing support behind prince harry. yup. after 9:30. so here comes the buzz bin. we'll be right back. >> if we come back. when we switched to fios, we got better tv,

minutes. >> what's going on? >> i think it would be unfortunate if, you know, if the prince harry thing hadn't happened with the naked photos. but now it's just kind of amusing that prince philip, who is the queen's husband, was out in scotland wearing a kilt and you get the -- and no underwear and he is sit there is kind of flashing everyone and it's just funny on the tails of everything that happened with prince harry. you know, the royals are showing off their goods left and right. >> i like the little crown that you put there. classy touch. >> how's the new baby? >> i'm exhsleeping through the night. >> thank you. of course we'll be watching tmz after the news. >> i hope we don't see any more naked royals. that was enough. >> i don't need to at all.

right here. so, quick story. how old are you, what kind of work do you do? >> 37, i do home improvement. >> reporter: so young and active. >> stand up for me. he is fit. he has everything going for him. the problem is, the blood pressure is -- read it and weep here, guys... 174/111. >> reporter: that's high. >> and it's the third time we have checked it. it's been higher than that. >> wow. >> so the reason i want him to stand up is a symbol of what 15- minute clinic all b none of us know our numbers. i have to assume if you don't know your blood pressure, for example, then it's not good. who would have thought a stud like this would have a number that wasn't where it was supposed to be. when you have a number that high, it's rusting await inside of your body. you're doing home improvement, you not rusty tubes in the houses, that's what's going on in your houses. the first thing you need to do is figure out why the numbers

are so high. there are a couple of possibilities. do you have a family history of high blood pressure? >> yes. >> all right. so right off the bat we know there's probably a genetic issue but it's okay. every once in a while it's okay to take a small little pill with not a lot of side effects to get your blood pressure into the right range. sometimes, though, we find other problems. there could be abnormality in your kidneys. i don't want people in fear. this is a joyous moment for you because you just saved your life today. now we know there's an issue with your number and how easy it is to check, now we can find out what's wrong and fix it and you'll be able to raise kids, great grandkids. >> are you going to do? >> i'm gonna do it! >> all right, very good. we'll get you healthier. >> reporter: all right so we have been here since early this morning. can you tell us how things are trending? >> i got a wonderful team. it's a medical unit bring them all down from the show. so mike walk us through the numbers so far. the initial intake i want to give you three very concrete numbers. >> sure. if you look at heart disease. we can actually see in realtime
9:49 am
what we have been seeing throughout the day. it's not looking too good if you look at blood pressure. let's take a look here. at least half, over half, 55% of people are at least prehypertensive or hypertensive. >> one out of two people. >> when washington, d.c. has numbers that high, that's higher than other cities, we have done this in other places -- >> reporter: it's a pressure cooker here in the district, why oz. >> it is. you have been saying it all day. >> reporter: give us another number. >> that's busting our butts that one. but in terms of scraping our blood vessels we have a lot of sugar in the bloodstream people coming through the clinic here. we look at least half are also -- about half are also prediabetes or diabetic. so at least half the people here have too much sugar in their blood. >> this orange bar is the number of people who have prediabetes. diabetes. these are the number of people who know it. >> oh, wow.
9:50 am
>> now, that is -- >> one in five people knew they had a problem. so five times more than realize it did have a problem. that's why we do the clinic. if you don't know your numbers, folks, i'm going to assume they are not normal. >> reporter: before we go, dr. oz your picture is everywhere. you are a rock star in terms of the medical world. i'm not kidding you. did you ever think when you went into medicine that you were going to be able to do something like this? >> never crossed my mind and frankly, if it, i don't think it would have happened. but this happens because people like mike and the medical unit. all the wonderful people who spent their time coming to the clinic today. for everyone at home, doesn't wait, come on down, join us today and then you be the rock that makes the ripple that affects the entire pond of washington, d.c. look at you guys. are you all on board with this? all these people know their numbers. tell the people you care about that you learned about your own body so they can take care of the temple of the soul. >> reporter: you heard it from dr. oz. he wrote the prescription for you. >> yeah!! > >> reporter: back to you in the studio. >> whoo!
9:51 am
>> i should have done that. that would have looked better. anyway. >> good stuff. >> thanks so much. dr. oz, thank you so much for what you're doing for the city. we have scoured the web for stories that we think are worth sharing and tony and i sitting on our little love seat. >> we're not alone. [ laughter ] >> we're all here. >> everybody is here, wisdom and tucker. first let's start with the heartwarming story about a dog's long journey home. meet bucky, everybody. he is a three-year-old black lab couldn't let his best friend go. his owner mark moved to myrtle beach, south carolina and was told that he couldn't have a dog. so he left bucky with family in winchester, virginia. soon after, though, bucky disappeared. guess what. he was found months later, where else, myrtle beach, south carolina! from virginia! a vet found him microchip and called his owner, mark, who says buckey is glad to be home. >> isn't that amazing? >> incredible. >> unbelievable. >> i have heard of dogs like if
9:52 am
they have been somewhere and they find their way back but that dog had never been there, right, as far as we know? >> as far as we know. >> maybe he went to visit with him but still he would have been in a car. there are so many questions about it. >> well, they do have records he rented a car and drove down there. [ laughter ] >> smart dog. >> he probably did catch a ride because i can't see how he could have -- >> me being the negative person that i am. >> let me say this. we don't know the details. we got lady bird chip. with the chip service you are plugged into a databank so when an animal is missing, i get alerts like fido is missing and could be in your area because the chip would probably -- maybe it would say that his owner mark is now in myrtle beach. but we don't know the details. we just know bucky got back with his owner. >> i think i want to say real quick i love both dogs and cats but this really highlights the difference between dogs and

cats. >> would you stop? >> here we go. >> if you disappear and, you know, you have a dog, the dog will do anything to find you. if you leave and you have a cat, the cat is glad you left. >> that's not true. >> we do stories of cats finding their owners. >> i will find them! [ laughter ] >> how many cats are you up to now? >> just two. [ laughter ] >> cat lady. >> i have not hit the 3 threshold. >> all right, sarra . what's next? >> there is a new trend apparently to help people with body image issues. mirror fasting. so here's how it works. the faster chooses a set length of time to not look at him or herself in the mirror. i know this doesn't apply to you. >> you can stop reading that right now. >> some people do as little as a day, others as long as a year. many of the fasters have logged their experiences online and say they feel more in touch with their body and don't worry as much as before.

now, the idea has raised eyebrows. and one psychologist points out that the backlash shows our culture's obsession with youth and beauty. what do you think. >> i think it's putting a band- aid on the problem. you have to take a hard long realistic look at yourself before you can move forward to achieve whatever image. i'm not saying you have to be thin. you know, i'm not saying that. but i am saying, come on. >> is it a band-aid on the problem if it helps? >> how is it helping? >> it helps some people. they don't look in the mirror and find they are doing better. >> how? that doesn't make sense. >> psychological i guess. >> i don't understand how you don't look at yourself before you -- to make sure that the image that other people see -- i'm talking about just with -- perhaps you're not looking at mirror naked? is that it? is that the x factor that i'm missing? >> i want to highlight the difference between men and women. men look in the mirror and never think they don't look good. >> stop again there. >> that's not true. i know some people who look in
9:55 am
the mirror, males. >> really. >> and tear themselves apart? i don't agree with that, either. ripping yourself athe pa. but i will say this and sarah maybe i can get a holler if you hear me on this one. the mirrors in fitting rooms with the lighting or whatever it is -- >> oh. >> -- i can do without that. >> it's harsh. >> i think it would be to make you look as good as possible. >> no, it's not done. the higher end department stores i notice make the lighting much nicer. >> okay. >> but some of the ones that are, you know, not -- >> industrial lighting in there. >> yeah. you think really? it's like come on. i would rather take this home and try it on than try it on right here because it's like it just seems like this light comes down on you -- >> mirror fast with that it difference between men and women. we just buy it and try it on at home, get out as quickly as possible. >> never seen the inside of a dressing room. [ laughter ] >> it wouldn't would be for me. i need to look at what's going on. >> i got to look at myself. we'll be right back. >> for other reasons. [ laughter ] virg

inia. it makes millions off marylanders every year. now they're running dishonest ads. why? because voting for question seven is a vote to build a... world-class resort casino in maryland. creating thousands of jobs and... ...according to the official department of legislative... services, hundreds of millions for our schools. while saving taxpayer money by cutting casino subsidies. question seven. good jobs and better schools in maryland. not west virginia.

good jobs and better schools in maryland. not west virginia. mitt romney's position on approe women's health...it's dangerous. vo:mitt romney and paul ryan would get rid of planned parenthood funding. and allow employers to deny coverage for cancer screenings and birth control. we can't afford to let him take away our choices... to take away basic health care. vo: both backed proposals to outlaw abortions...even in cases of rape and incest. i don't think that women's health issues have faced a crisis like this in decades.
